Google Local Search Dashboard

| Dashboard Screenshots | Comments (1)

Dashboards By Example readers will recall the sneak peek of the new upcoming search engine, Microsoft Bing, and it's use of a dashboard/scorecard to present reviews of certain local search results such as restaurants. See Microsoft Bing Scorecard. In a similar vein, Google has rolled out today (June 1, 2009) a dashboard layout for its local search results. Thanks goes to the Dashboard Spy who sent me the screenshot with the early preview. The Google Local Business Center Dashboard is basically a "Search Analysis Dashboard". It is for users of Google's Local Business Center, a service that all

Dashboard Examples using Oracle Portal

| Dashboard Screenshots | Comments (3)

"I have a hard time telling what a dashboard is these days. For example, what's the difference between a portal and a dashboard? Even the terms are the same - "Portlet", for example, is used in both paradigms to describe a little container of like subject matter." This recent comment by a Dashboard Spy reader rings true. There is a real convergence in thought, and in product offerings, making it hard to really differentiate between shades of dashboa rding. But, what does it matter? To me, they are all dashboards. Anything that consolidates information in a visual, concise fashion counts as a

Back to basics article on executive dashboards

| Dashboard Screenshots | Comments (0)

This article by Alex Kirtland on boxesandarrows.com at http://www.boxesandarrows.com/view/executive_dashboards was and still is a great primer on dashboards. It's from 2003, but well worth a revisit. Here's a shot from it that features a simplified dashboard architecture. It shows how the user needs of answering fundamental business questions, getting alerts and decision making are met by a system filtering raw data through the processes of personalization, key performance indicators, and data manipulation. So what or who is The Dashboard Spy? As his about page states, The Dashboard Spy is

Hospital Bed Occupancy Management Enterprise Dashboard circa 2001

| Dashboard Screenshots | Comments (1)

In speaking to an enterprise dashboard project member, who also happens to be a physician involved with hospital management, I reviewed a series of screenshots from my dashboard collection of a hospital dashboard from the year 2002. I remember it well because of the fine documentation that accompanied the project. It was featured at the 2002 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society meeting. I looked for it on the web and, sure enough, here is a detailed description and analysis of the Real-Time Bed Management and Census Control Dashboard project. The challenge of the enterp

Enterprise Dashboard vendor, SAS, scored a 4.1 in the 2005 Meta Group Enterprise Reporting and Dashboard Assessment that we've been detailed these past few posts. The 4.1 score ties SAS with Microsoft, and put them in a tie for fifth place. Estimates, Jobs & Invoices Dashboard - Optimizing small business workflows

| Dashboard Screenshots | Comments (0)

I've been spying on the progress of a small business dashboard being done by a designer in Wales. Take a look at his first post about the need for a better way to track the workflow and metrics surrounding project estimation, billing and job status for his design practice. After getting a sense of his requirements, take a look at this update where he posts his progress. I grabbed for you the dashboard screenshots shown here. There are 4 tabs: dashboard, jobs, estimates and invoices. I'll only show a screenshot or two for each tab, but you can go to the links above to see (and read about

Project Pipeline and Resource Allocation Enterprise Dashboard

Dashboard Topic: Project Management DashboardsInformation Technology department managers know the difficulty of allocating human resources across multiple projects. What is the correct level of staffing necessary to both handle the workload quickly yet also be most cost effective? Obviously you can staff for maximum load, but the cost would be too high. Conversely, you can run a barebones staff, and save on budget, but then your capacity is constrained. How to strike a balance? From a few years back comes this project/resource executive dashboard from http://www.innerfacedesign.com/pr_pipeli

Dashboards for Monitoring Elections

Update: Let's fast-forward a couple of years to Election Day 2008. Obama vs. McCain. Mashup dashboards are all the rage and here's a look at an election results map from Google: As a nod to Election Day, I'll start a dialog about using digital dashboards to track election-related matters. We've all seen the extension of business dashboards to encompass other subjects, but political statistics seem particularly well suited for dashboard-style presentation. Here is a dashboard dedicated to tracking the Tennessee Senate Race. You can view it at http://senate.tnpoliticsblog.com/. Homework: I

Red Green Yellow Indicator Icons Used at Google

A Dashboard Spy reader liberated these little red/green/yellow color icons. He says that they are used by Google for various state indicators. Just thought I'd pass them along. And this is an animated gif with the balls moving around in a "please wait" type of holding pattern. Tags: Dashboard Icons, Red/Green/Yellow Indicators

Psychiatric Patient Monitoring Dashboard - Demo of enterprise dashboard techniques used at Stanford Medical Center

| Dashboard Screenshots | Comments (0)

Here is an online demo of a psychiatric patient monitoring dashboard used at the Stanford Medical Center psych unit. I really like the no-nonsense design of this enterprise dashboard. It is quite appropriate for its use and environment. It looks clean with a clinical flavor and is yet slick because of its functionality. You have to try out the collapse/expand of the charts and the notes section. This well-done digital dashboard speaks for itself. I'm sure that it is a big success with the medical staff. Homework: The best way to make sure that your dashboard is a success is to really pay at

Flash vs. AJAX Dashboards - Goowy, a Flash-based Web OS Dashboard

| Dashboard Screenshots | Comments (0)

Interesting post at http://harshdeep.wordpress.com/2006/03/09/goowy-the-web-os-showing-off-the-power-of-flash/ where there is a discussion of Flash versus AJAX for powering rich client interactivity. Now I know that the screenshot below is not an executive dashboard, but rather an OS widget thingy dashboard, but i'm going to post it on this blog anyway. In fact, I've been under pressure as to why I'm not including those kinds of dashboards since from a User Interface design perspective, there is much value in studing dashboards of any nature. I've been trying to focus on business dashboards,

Books on Enterprise Dashboards

The book that I am most impressed with right now is Enterprise Dashboards: Design and Best Practices for IT . Right now, it's the only book out there dealing with issues of implementing dashboards. It's a must read. Use the link to get a great price from Amazon.  The other really hot dashboarding book is  Stephan Few's book, Information Dashboard Design: The Effective Visual Communication of Data. Great visuals. The third book that everyone seems to be reading is Performance Dashboards: Measuring, Monitoring, and Managing Your Business. In the marketing space, there is a book focused on

Dashboard Spy Update: Dear readers - sorry for the wrong URL for the "Keeping Score Survey" pdf. I've fixed the link. See below: Once a business intelligence project gets underway, there is a flurry of analysis, design, construction and testing. We get so busy that we sometimes lose sight as to the reasons why we adopt our dashboards, scorecards and performance alerting systems in the first place. Let's take a step back and look at the reasons behind the trend of the last few years toward enterprise dashboards, executive scorecards and other performance measuring applications. In September

4 Principles for Dashboard Gauges

| Dashboard Screenshots | Comments (4)

In a recent Dashboards by Example post titled Dashboard Eye Candy, we poked fun at the usage of big honking dashboard gauges. Like them or not, however, they do indeed have their place on business intelligence applications. One of the example gauges used in the article came from the folks at Perpetuum Software, maker of .NET Dashboard Suite, a set of dial/gauge/charting components. In response to the post, they submitted an article to The Dashboard Spy detailing 4 principles to observe when using gauges in digital dashboards and business applications. The article explores the basic principl

IT Governance Executive Dashboard Video from Microsoft

Microsoft Office has grown to a point where its component toolset is robust enough to create some quite compelling executive dashboards.  Of course, MS Office is not just the collection of word/excel/powerpoint that we typically think of. The reason why we can now do some very sophisticated dashboarding with Office is that it now officially includes some big products like SharePoint, InfoPath, and Business Scorecard Manager. Of course, when you include heavyweight applications like those, you can definitely do some nice work in the enterprise dashboard space. The best intro to the use of MS

Youtube embraces dashboard layout in videos

| Uncategorized | Comments (0)

Enterprise Dashboard Digest readers know how I like to point out the ever-increasing adoption by the public of the dashboard layout as a design pattern. I'm always pointing out examples of dashboard-like layouts in popular software applications. I believe that the prevalence of the dashboard design is what makes today's business intelligence dashboards so easy to adopt and embrace. I just noticed that Youtube is now laying out "related videos" in a dashboard-like pattern at the end of their videos. Have you noticed what it now looks like? Take a look at these examples:
